The five-CD set delves deep into the catalog of the influential artist, featuring not only his iconic hits, but also rarities, live recordings and several previously unreleased tracks. Housed in a 56-page book, the collection includes a wide selection of photos, taken throughout the musician’s life, plus new liner notes by writer and John Lee Hooker historian Jas Obrecht, as well as by the artist’s longtime manager and friend, Mike Kappus.

John Lee Hooker might well have passed on almost twenty years ago, in 2001, but his spirit and musical legacy lives on. With this huge five-album release, the scene is again set for the old bluesman to steal centre-stage. Tracks range across most of his material covering much of the legendary boogie-king’s vast back-catalogue.

From his early, pared-down, near acoustic feeling takes on old, ever-popular, numbers like Catfish,to his more prominent, internationally recognised and live-stage, touring centre-pieces like Boom Boom, King of the Boogie, features a bit of just about everything the guy ever did with his sparse but effective bouncing fretwork and growling vocal delivery.

Whoever put this collection together, did a great job, clearly understanding the guy, his music and his place in the world blues firmament. There is little that seems to have been missed out here, including the always welcome joint work with Bonnie Raitt on slide led-track, In The Mood for Love, where the chemistry between the pair is immediately apparent.

Hooker had a pretty individual style, a recognisable laid-back attack that still has countless imitators and fans around the world. Anybody who likes the guy and his repetitive, drilling blues will want this latest release, a five-disc, one hundred track compilation, making this an absolute must-have for the King of Boogie’s fans everywhere.
