Vroegah was alles anders of …… .Je was voor Ajax of Feyenoord, The Beatles of The Rolling Stones, Puch of Tomos, maar ook voor de soul van Motown of Stax. Wat was het verschil tussen Motown en Stax? De sound van Motown en het orkest dat alle nummers van sound voorzag was wat soft, smooth en de soul van Stax? Die was wat vetter, vuig en ruiger. Ook bij Stax was er één orkest van sessiemuzikanten die speelden op iedere uitgave van dit label: The Funk Brothers.

Deze jongens hadden blazers en Hammond met wat distortion en aanverwante effecten, geen zoetgevooisde vioolklanken zoals bij Motown. Stax brengt zo nu en dan een pakket uit met , oneerbiedig gezegd, archiefwerk. Het brengt wat geld in het laatje van deze ooit zo roemruchte maatschappij. Lees hun History maar eens op hun site.

De single-pakketten zijn vaak van bijzondere kwaliteit en een vindplaats aan vergeten artiesten en songs. Met het pakket ‘Stax Singles, Vol. 4: Rarities & The Best Of The Rest’ komt daar een wel heel fraai pakket bij. Het bevat maar liefst 145 tracks op 6 cd’s en die zijn goed van geluidskwaliteit.

Naast muziek van grote sterren als Carla Thomas, Otis Redding, Booker T, vind je ook voor ons minder bekende jongens en meisjes zoals Bobby Marchan, Baracudes, Barbara & The Browns.

De titel van het pakket zegt het al: ook een aantal “Rarities”. Een ware vindplaats aan vergeten en of onbekende soul. Als muziekliefhebber met een flinke verzameling mag ie eigenlijk niet ontbreken; een pracht pakket voor een ieder die van de soul is , Stax of Motown. Draai ze en je waant je even in een andere tijd. Niks mis mee.
