Mitch Ryder burns brightly and continues to light up the stage on his new live album, The Roof Is On Fire.
Maybe no one personifies Motor City music better than the man who named his band the Detroit Wheels. Mitch Ryder launched his career during the glory days of ‘60s rock n’ roll where he made his name with a mix of potent live performances and hit singles. And like Neil Young said, it’s better to burn out than fade away, and that’s exactly what happened to the original band as their wild two-year rocket ride from 1965 to 1967 brought them fame, but sadly no fortune, while tearing the band apart in the process. But as the cliché goes, sometimes what doesn’t kill a man just makes him stronger.
Through decades and musical trends that came and went, one thing remained consistent with Ryder, the energy he brought to the stage. And that’s been enough to keep fans coming to shows throughout the now 60+ years since he first took to the stage in 1963 as the leader of Billy Lee & the Rivieras. During a career peppered with wild moments like being the last person to perform with Otis Redding to having John Mellencamp produce his cover of a Prince song, Ryder has experienced just about it all and thankfully for us, he lived to tell about it.
Which brings us to The Roof Is On Fire about which Ryder recently expained, “This double CD was a part of my 75th birthday while on tour in Germany. Normally I would take exception in involving my age into any aspect of my life. You see, when it comes to music, age is totally irrelevant. So whether you are making music with beginners or seasoned veterans, such as I have on this compilation, the focus point is not about age but about fun and music combined. I am very familiar with most of the players on this work. Over the years, since we had our first rehearsal in a communist-run youth center in East Berlin, our integrity, power, self-respect, and accomplishment have grown unilaterally. For those fans who have been with us from the beginning, they will readily note that the music created with this group of musicians gives my early debut in West Germany a real run for its money. So sit back, listen, and enjoy an evolutionary process that I wish would go on forever.”

Mitch Ryder brandt fel en blijft het podium verlichten op zijn nieuwe live-album The Roof Is On Fire.
Misschien personifieert niemand de muziek van Motor City beter dan de man die zijn band de Detroit Wheels noemde. Mitch Ryder lanceerde zijn carrière tijdens de gloriedagen van de rock-‘n-roll uit de jaren ’60, waar hij naam maakte met een mix van krachtige liveoptredens en hitsingles. En zoals Neil Young zei, het is beter om op te branden dan om weg te kwijnen, en dat is precies wat er gebeurde met de originele band toen hun wilde tweejarige raketreis van 1965 tot 1967 hen roem bracht, maar helaas geen fortuin, terwijl de band in het proces uit elkaar scheurde. Maar zoals het cliché gaat, soms maakt wat een man niet doodt hem alleen maar sterker.
Door de decennia en muzikale trends die kwamen en gingen, bleef er één ding consistent met Ryder: de energie die hij op het podium bracht. En dat is genoeg geweest om fans naar shows te laten komen in de ruim 60 jaar sinds hij voor het eerst het podium betrad in 1963 als leider van Billy Lee & the Rivieras. Tijdens een carrière vol wilde momenten, zoals de laatste persoon zijn die met Otis Redding optrad tot John Mellencamp zijn cover van een Prince-nummer laten produceren, heeft Ryder zowat alles meegemaakt en gelukkig voor ons heeft hij het allemaal nog kunnen navertellen.
Dat brengt ons bij The Roof Is On Fire waarover Ryder onlangs verklaarde: “Deze dubbel-cd was een onderdeel van mijn 75e verjaardag terwijl ik op tournee was in Duitsland. Normaal gesproken zou ik er bezwaar tegen hebben om mijn leeftijd bij een aspect van mijn leven te betrekken. Als het om muziek gaat, is leeftijd totaal irrelevant. Dus of je nu muziek maakt met beginners of met doorgewinterde veteranen, zoals ik op deze compilatie, het gaat niet om leeftijd maar om plezier en muziek samen. Ik ken de meeste spelers op dit werk heel goed. In de loop der jaren, sinds we onze eerste repetitie hadden in een door communisten geleid jeugdcentrum in Oost-Berlijn, zijn onze integriteit, kracht, zelfrespect en prestaties eenzijdig gegroeid. De fans die er vanaf het begin bij zijn geweest, zullen snel opmerken dat de muziek die met deze groep muzikanten is gemaakt, mijn vroege debuut in West-Duitsland ver achter zich laat. Dus leun achterover, luister en geniet van een evolutionair proces waarvan ik zou willen dat het eeuwig door zou gaan.”
