Slash will have a brilliant new blues album, Orgy of the Damned coming out on May 17 on Gibson Records.
This album and tour is a passion project for Slash, he is steeped in the Blues and this is a throughline from his music history, and how this genre has influenced every singer on this album and tour. His goal is to put a spotlight back on the Blues genre of which all of these players have also been deeply influenced by.

SLASH, the iconic, GRAMMY®-winning guitarist and songwriter, has announced his highly anticipated sixth solo album titled Orgy of the Damned, will be released on May 17 via Gibson Records and is available to pre-order now HERE. A collection of 12 dynamic songs that shakes up and revitalizes blues classics with a stripped-down, instinctive approach, SLASH’s new album, Orgy of the Damned, creates a singular expression that pays homage to the blues.
The first single “Killing Floor,”-which features Brian Johnson of AC/DC on vocals, and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith on harmonica-is an electrifying, raucous and gleefully unbridled take on Howlin’ Wolf’s 1964 Chicago blues standard; stream “Killing Floor,” out today HERE.

By celebrating both well-known and largely undiscovered songs, SLASH offers a nostalgic nod to the past while reinvigorating the songs with his inimitable guitar playing and the spirit of collaboration. For Orgy of the Damned, the acclaimed guitarist re-teamed with storied producer Mike Clink and enlisted the album’s diverse guest vocalists, which include Gary Clark Jr, Billy F. Gibbons, Chris Stapleton, Dorothy, Iggy Pop, Paul Rodgers, Demi Lovato, Brian Johnson, Tash Neal, Chris Robinson, and Beth Hart, in a similar way to his 2010 self-titled solo LP Slash. To round out his band in the studio and on the road, SLASH reunited with two of his bandmates from his Blues Ball outfit in the 90s, bassist Johnny Griparic and keyboardist Teddy Andreadis, and brought on drummer Michael Jerome and singer/guitarist Tash Neal.
Although he grew up in England, SLASH’s American grandmother turned him on to the blues early on, and he was immediately taken with B.B. King. At the same time, his parents raised him on a healthy diet of 60s British rock ‘n’ roll, from The Who to The Kinks. Once he moved to Laurel Canyon, SLASH found himself surrounded by rock and folk singers like Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Neil Young—all of whom eventually inspired his playing and songwriting. It wasn’t until he began playing guitar himself that SLASH realized all of his favorite musicians had been influenced by the same B.B. King blues records he’d listened to as a young kid.
Orgy of the Damned encompasses a broad range of styles within the blues genre, veering from an upbeat, rowdy take on Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” to a plaintive, twanging rendition of T. Bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday.” Some of the songs, like Steppenwolf’s “The Pusher,” Charlie Segar’s “Key to the Highway,” and Albert King’s “Born Under a Bad Sign,” had been performed by Slash’s Blues Ball, while others, like Stevie Wonder’s “Living for the City,” were long-time favorites for Slash. “Hoochie Coochie Man,” written by Willie Dixon and made famous by Muddy Waters in 1954, showcases the in-the-moment nature and unrestrained energy of Orgy of the Damned, with Z.Z. Top’s Billy F. Gibbons stepping in on guitar and vocals. The group went into a rehearsal room in North Hollywood and began hashing out soulful, rollicking takes on the classic songs. Everything was played live in the room, with an emphasis on improvisation which resulted in a collection of dynamic, energized songs that are immediate, raw, and distinctly familiar.
As SLASH was considering vocalists, he approached his old friend and collaborator, Iggy Pop, who had long wanted to record a blues song. Pop suggested Lightnin’ Hopkins’ 1962 track, “Awful Dream,” a sparse, drawling number originally laid down on acoustic guitar. The duo decided to recreate that stripped back vibe and recorded their own languid, emotionally resonant version sitting on two stools in SLASH’s studio. “Iggy’s interpretation of that song is actually sublime,” says SLASH. “And it’s something that nobody’s really heard from him. At the end of the track, you can hear him just singing the harmonica parts.”
Elsewhere on Orgy of the Damned, Demi Lovato lends her powerhouse voice to “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” a fervent, soulful version of the 1972 single by The Temptations that SLASH admired as a kid. Although the song veers more towards R&B, the guitarist wanted to give it his own impassioned spin. The album concludes with a soaring original instrumental number, “Metal Chestnut,” penned specifically for Orgy of the Damned by Slash.
Orgy of the Damned showcases a lesser-heard aspect of SLASH’s musical prowess. While he has always embraced a broad range of styles and genres, the album offers a rare opportunity to explore a unique side of his playing and bring to the forefront a rollicking journey through his strong blues inspirations, that have long been in the background of his illustrious career.

De Amerikaanse gitaarlegende Slash (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Slash Ft. Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators) brengt op vrijdag 17 mei a.s. zijn nieuwe solo-album ‘Orgy Of The Damned’ uit bij platenlabel Gibson Records, met daarop covers van blues classics die hij eigenhandig heeft geselecteerd.
De eerste single die daaraan vandaag voorafgaat is een cover van Howlin’ Wolf’s ‘Killing Floor’ uit 1964, met Brian Johnson van AC/DC als gastzanger. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler vervult een fanatieke glansrol op mondharmonica op deze blues klassieker. In de bijgaande video ‘Killing Floor’ zien we Slash en zijn bluesband, bestaande uit Johnny Griparic (bas), Teddy Andreadis (keyboards), Michael Jerome (drums) en Tash Neal (zang/gitaar).
Slash:”‘Killing Floor’ is een van mijn favoriete Howlin’ Wolf-nummers, maar ook een van de iconische bluesriffs die mij als jonge gitarist instant raakte. Ik heb er altijd al op de een of andere manier een cover van willen maken en deze plaat was de perfecte aanleiding om dat te doen. Toen ik het nummer daadwerkelijk met de band speelde – met Brian Johnson als zanger – realiseerde ik me dat ik me vroeger nooit had kunnen stellen dat het zo geweldig klonk. En al helemaal dankzij de verbluffende mondharmonicapartij van Steven Tyler.”
Brian Johnson: “Toen Slash me vroeg om ‘Killing Floor’ te zingen zei ik meteen ja. Het was een van de eerste nummers die ik leerde in mijn allereerste band. Toen hij de track voor me speelde, was het al helemaal een no-brainer. Plus: Steven’s harmonica is so bloody hot. I had a ball with Slash in the studio, and I think we did this great old song justice.”
Als groot bluesliefhebber permitteerde Slash zich bij het maken van dit hoorbaar met veel liefde gemaakte solo-album alle vrijheid (waardoor hij alle ruimte neemt om als gitarist te excelleren met adembenemende soli) en liet hij zich leiden door het grote respect en de bewondering voor zijn blueshelden die hij met dit album wil eren. ‘Orgy Of The Damned’ bevat 12 tracks waarvan de laatste -‘ Metal Chestnut’ – een door Slash speciaal voor dit album geschreven instrumental is. Voor de overige elf songs vroeg hij evenzoveel van zijn favoriete zangers en zangeressen (zie de tracklist + gastzangers (M/V)).
‘Orgy Of The Damned’ laat een minder bekende kant van Slash’s muzikale kunnen zien. Hoewel hij altijd al een brede waaier aan stijlen en genres heeft omarmd, biedt het album een inkijkje in zijn vroege inspiratiebronnen en huidige fascinaties. In plaats van op te nemen met zijn kenmerkende muur van versterkers, hield hij het heel basic, met een kleine combo versterker en een paar oude gitaren. Dit gaf hem de kans om een unieke kant van zijn gitaarspel te verkennen.
Slash: “Bij alle hardrock bands waarin ik speel wordt de muziek meestal in een waanzinnig tempo gebracht met een zekere agressie. Dit album is nog steeds in mijn stijl, en het heeft nog steeds een soort eigen agressie omdat dat nu eenmaal mijn manier van spelen is. Maar tegelijkertijd heeft het een basic, uitgeklede sound die transparant en rauw is. Het was een andere benadering. Ik maak niet vaak dit soort platen en je hoort me niet altijd in deze context opnames maken. Maar ik hield van wat we op dat moment hebben vastgelegd.”
Op dinsdag 9 april 2024 komt SLASH ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators naar Amsterdam voor een show in de Amsterdamse Ziggo Dome. Deze show is onderdeel van de ‘The River Is Rising’ wereldtournee 2024 ter promotie van Slash’s meest recente studio-album ‘4’ dat in 2022 via Gibson Records verscheen.
Ruim twee weken later keert de band terug naar de Benelux voor een tweede show, en wel op vrijdag 26 april 2024 in Rockhal te Esch/Alzette in Luxemburg. Voor beide shows is Mammoth WVH (Wolfgang van Halen) de support act. De lopende wereldtournee voert SMKC naar Zuid-Amerikaanse, Japanse en Europese podia, met in totaal 21 landen en 32 steden.
Hoewel hij opgroeide in Engeland bracht Slash’s Amerikaanse grootmoeder hem al vroeg in aanraking met de blues; op vroege leeftijd raakte hij in de ban van B.B. King. Tegelijkertijd voedden zijn ouders hem op met een gezond dieet van Britse rock-‘n-roll uit de jaren zestig, van The Who tot The Kinks. De groep betrok een repetitieruimte in North Hollywood en begon met het uitwerken van soulvolle, swingende versies van klassieke blues nummers die vervolgens met de legendarische producer Mike Clink (o.a. Whitesnake, Guns N’ Roses, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth, Jefferson Starship, The Babys, Heart, Steve Vai) werden opgenomen.
‘Orgy Of The Damned’ omarmt een breed scala aan stijlen binnen het blues genre, variërend van een uptempo, rauwe versie van Robert Johnson’s ‘Crossroads’ tot een klaaglijke, twangy uitvoering van T. Bone Walker’s ‘Stormy Monday’. ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’, geschreven door Willie Dixon en beroemd gemaakt door Muddy Waters in 1954, laat de ‘in-the-moment’ aard en ontembare energie van ‘Orgy Of The Damned’ horen met Billy F. Gibbons van ZZ Top op gitaar en vocals.
Slash benaderde ook zijn oude vriend en collega Iggy Pop, die zelf al lang een bluesnummer wilde opnemen. Iggy stelde Lightnin’ Hopkins’ track ‘Awful Dream’ uit 1962 voor: een kaal, traag nummer dat oorspronkelijk op een akoestische gitaar werd opgenomen. Het duo besloot die stripped back sfeer te hercreëren en nam een eigen en emotioneel geladen versie op, zittend op twee krukken in Slash’s studio. “Iggy’s interpretatie van dat nummer is eigenlijk subliem”, zegt Slash. “En het is iets wat niemand ooit eerder van hem heeft gehoord. Aan het einde van het nummer kun je hem de harmonica-partijen horen zingen.”
Op het album heeft Steven Tyler van Aerosmith een harmonica-cameo op de eerste single van het album: een razende, vrolijk ongebonden versie van Howlin’ Wolf’s klassieker ‘Killing Floor’ uit 1964, met Brian Johnson van AC/DC op vocalen.
