B.B. King – ‘Live at Montreux 1993′ (DVD/Blu-Ray);
The regular DVD has 16 tracks, the Blu-Ray has 19 (3 bonustracks from BB’s 2006 Montreux show).

Allen Toussaint – ‘The Bright Mississippi’ (CD);
For the first time in his storied career, Toussaint—composer, pianist, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee—explores the work of his New Orleans forebears on a soulful, live-in-the-studio jazz set, produced by Joe Henry. Like the artist himself, the performances display an easygoing elegance and effortless swing. Guests include Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau.

Nicole Hart – Treasure (CD);
As a modern day Blues woman, Nicole straddles a diverse musical terrain defined by such icons as Koko Taylor, Susan Tedeschi, Janiva Magness, & Bonnie Raitt. Renowned for her sultry vocals and electrifying stage presence.

Sista Monica Parker – Soul Blues and Ballads (CD);
It is a compilation of her soulful R&B and slow blues jewels. This project includes “I Don’t Want To Hurt You Baby” featuring the masterful Chris Cain, “It’s A Shame – It’s A Mystery” featuring Dan Caron on guitar from the late Charles Brown band, “Behind My Back” with the soulful sound of Mike Osborne on guitar and veteran piano and Hammond B3 player – Danny “B”, “Honey It’s Your Fault” and “A Chance To Breathe” with the funky and deep-blues side of Larry McCray on guitar.

Doug Cox & Salil Bhatt – Slide To Freedom 2 – Make A Better World (CD);
Fusing Blues music with Indian music has been tried before, but no one has done it quite as successfully as Doug Cox and Salil Bhatt (the son of V.M. Bhatt).
Doug Cox – one of Canada’s best slide guitarists, teams up with Salil Bhatt – one of India’s best slide instrumentalists, along with special guest, Grammy-Award-Winning V.M. Bhatt (Salil’s father), and New Orleans Cajun / Soul singer John Boutte.

Ben Harper & Relentless7 – White Lies For Dark Times (CD)

The Yardbirds – Over Under Sideways Down (Digipak, limited edition);
This is a limited edition of 3000 copies, expertly re-mastered for superb sound. This classic 60s album is now available in Digipak format, featuring the rare Canadian cover on the front and poster with authoritative and extensive liner notes – including an exclusive interview with Chris Dreja of the Yardbirds – and reminiscences of the era of the album and the group in its heyday by respected author and journalist Chris Welch.

ERIC BIBB – LIVE A FIP (2 CD);
De Franse radiozender FIP maakte opnames van twee concerten van deze ondertussen in Europa zeer populaire bluesartiest en Dixiefrog maakte er deze mooie dubbel-cd van. Op de tweede cd staan er ook 20 minuten videobeelden van het tweede concert.

BO DIDDLEY – ROAD RUNNER / THE CHESS MASTERS 1959-1960 (2 CD, reissue);
De 52 tracks op deze dubbel-cd brengen het bewijs van de grote invloed van Bo Diddley en zijn groovende blues- en soul-muziek op de Rock’n’Roll geschiedenis. Met heel wat nooit eerder uitgebrachte ‘alternate takes’ die zeker voor verzamelaars onmisbaar zijn.

THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS – TACOS DE LUXE (CD, reissue);
Deze verzamelaar bevat het beste van wat de Fabulous Thunderbirds voor het Chrysalis label hebben uitgebracht– de periode voor 1982- toen ze nog volop aan de bluesrock banketten schransten.

William Clarke was een brilliant mondharmonicaspeler die een geheel eigen stijl introduceerde. Hij liet zich inspireren door Little Walter en Big Walter Horton. De volgende heruitgaves zijn deze maand weer beschikbaar gekomen voor de liefhebber:
> WILLIAM CLARKE – NOW, THAT YOU’RE GONE (CD, reissue);
Deze opnames van zijn vroege werk, dus lang voor zijn Alligatorperiode, haalde hij weg uit de studio twee dagen voor zijn overlijden. Deze opnames werden uitgebracht op initiatief van zijn weduwe.
> WILLIAM CLARKE – THE EARLY YEARS VOL. 1 (CD, reissue);
Hier vinden we opnames uit de periode 1978-1985. Sommige tracks werden nooit eerder uitgebracht andere komen van lp’s die al lang ‘collectablese zijn geworden. En kijk en luister eens, vriendje Hollywood Fats doet ook mee.
> WILLIAM CLARKE – THE EARLY YEARS VOL. 2 (CD, reissue);
Uiteraard de aansluiter en het vervolg op Vol 1. Meestal opnames gemaakt op het einde van de zeventiger jaren.

STRAY CATS – ROCK THERAPY (CD, reissue);
Na hun sucessen begin 1980-er jaren hielden de Stray Cats het voor een tijdje bekeken. In 1984 gaven ze enkele reünieconcerten en daarvan is dit album dan het resultaat. We horen een groot aantal retrobilly-covers van nummers van Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Chuck Berry, en Charlie Feathers, … among others.

STRAY CATS – BLAST OFF (CD, reissue);
En na 1984 kwam er in 1989 nog een reünie met dit ‘Blast Off’ – album als gevolg. Terug een setje swingende covers.

SNOWY WHITE BLUES PROJECT – IN OUR TIME LIVING (CD, release 20 april)

CHRISTOPHER REES – DEVIL’S BRIDGE (CD, release 4 mei);
Na een album gemaakt in zijn eentje in een verlaten hut in Wales en een album vol gastmusici, doet Christopher Rees het op dit vierde album ‘gewoon’ voornamelijk met een vaste band. Ondanks zijn afkomst waagt de Welshman zich wederom aan verschillende Americana stijlen en sferen. Rockabilly, Bluegrass, Apalachian Folk, Gospel; het wordt allemaal gebracht met een heerlijk authentieke vibe, terwijl zijn weelderige zang alles tot een eenheid smelt. Van cinematisch aandoende tremolo gitaren tot een 12-koppig koor, is dit weer een grote stap in een reis die met elk album meer en meer fascineerd.

ROGER CHAPMAN – HIDE GO SEEK (CD, release 7 mei);
Voormalig voorman van Family en Streetwalkers Roger Chapman verwarmt al vier decennia menig hart met zijn aparte vibrato. Deze dubbelaar verzamelt demo’s, verloren gewaande parels en alternatieve versies van bekendere titels. Zijn markante stemgeluid (ook te horen op de Mike Oldfield hit « Shadow On The Wall ») schittert in geuren en kleuren. De viering van het gouden oeuvre van een waar Brits Rock icoon; well done, Chappo !

SHARON ROBINSON – EVERYBODY KNOWS (CD);
Als achtergrondzangeres en mede songwriter bij Leonard Cohen heeft Sharon Robinson zich al aardig in de kijker gespeeld. Haar solo album is een verleidelijke
verzameling zwoele en relaxte songs vol ingehouden Soul. Classy!

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO – AN INTRODUCTION (CD);
Meester songwriter Alejandro Escovedo behoeft eigenlijk geen introductie meer, maar dat neemt niet weg dat de hier verzamelde tracks van zijn 5 sterren albums «Gravity », « 13 Years » en « By The Hand Of The Father » wederom een blijk geven van het prachtige kunnen van de man.

TAINTS – TAINT BLUES (CD, release 27 april);
The Taints (zanger/gitarist Steve Hohn, Nashville producer/songwriter Fred James en Appalachian singer/songwriter Bleu Jackson) graven diep in de wortels van Amerika. In de traditie van Little Feat, CCR en The Flying Burrito Brothers worden Rock, Blues, Country, Soul en Rockabilly schaamteloos door elkaar geschud.

Robin Trower – Rt @ Ro.08 (CD);
Eén van de ware Classic Rock gitaristen blijft natuurlijk Robin Trower. Onlangs oogste hij al groot succes met zijn project met Jack Bruce, maar vorig jaar was hij ook onder eigen naam actief aan het live front. Deze dubbelaar bevat de opnames van het concert gehouden op 24 maart 2008 in Royal Oak, Michigan. Robin mag dan inmiddels meer groeven in zijn gelaat hebben dan Tommy Lee Jones, met zijn reguliere band naast zich klinkt zijn licht psychedelische Seventies Rock verre van gehavend.

Neil Young – Fork In The Road (CD/DVD);
‘Fork In The Road’ is the raw, unpolished studio follow-up to Neil Young’s eclectic 2007 release ‘Chrome Dreams II’. Here the Canadian folk-rock pioneer returns to the production values of 2006’s ‘Living With War’ – this time presenting a batch of car themed songs that often allude to the state of the economy. While much of the material here is delivered at a relentless pace, the pedal-steel fuelled ballad ‘Light A Candle’ is one of the album’s finer moments. The new Neil Young album is available in two formats: CD and CD/DVD package which includes a bonus DVD which features a powerful live take on the Beatles’ ‘A Day In The Life’.

Bob Dylan – Together Through Life (CD/Vinyl);
Backed by his usual (and relentlessly touring) band of musicians, this record sees Dylan tackle more personal material than his last major release (2006’s ‘Modern Times’). ‘Together Through Life’ aligns more closely with Dylan’s more introverted works, such as ‘Blood On The Tracks’ from 1975, and features guest appearances from Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos.

Available as: 1) CD, 2) 2 x Vinyl LP set + CD and 3) A Limited Edition 2CD + DVD version which contains bonus CD of Bob Dylan’s “Theme Time Radio Hour,” (“Friends & Neighbors” episode) and a DVD of “Roy Silver – The Lost Interview”.

RICK ESTRIN & THE NIGHTCATS – TWISTED (CD, release 2 juni);
Brilliant songwriter, world-class harmonica player and streetwise vocalist Rick Estrin was the very popular front man with the internationally renowned Little Charlie & The Nightcats for over 30 years. They played thousands of club, theatre and festival gigs across the U.S. and around the world. Plus, Rick wrote the vast majority of the songs (including the Blues Music Award-winner “My Next Ex-Wife”) on their nine critically acclaimed albums. Little Charlie & The Nightcats have over 115,000 career scans, with their first three releases pre-dating SoundScan.
Recently, when guitarist Little Charlie Baty retired from touring, Estrin recruited six-string whiz Kid Andersen. With this hot new combination, Rick has kept on creating and playing the smartest, hippest blues and roots music around, and taking it on the road to happy audiences everywhere. Rick averaged 150-200 gigs a year with Little Charlie & The Nightcats, a work ethic he’ll continue with the new band.
