Willie "Popsy" Dixon, drummer and vocalist of the critically acclaimed soul/blues band The Holmes Brothers, has been diagnosed with stage four bladder cancer. He is celebrated for his soaring, soulful multi-octave vocals and his driving, in-the-pocket drumming. Shortly after performing with the band on December 6, Dixon was hospitalized with pneumonia. Royal Southern Brotherhood will enlist the help of guitarists Bart Walker and Tyrone Vaughan for their third studio release, recorded at FAME Studios located along the Tennessee River in Muscle Shoals. Vaughan hails from extensive rock lineage as the son of blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan and nephew of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Walker, a Nashville native, is a classically trained guitarist who has collaborated with the likes of Mike Farris and Reese Wynan before focusing on a solo career. The two new guitarists will replace Mike Zito and Devon Allman, who decided to concentrate on their solo careers. A long-time presence on the St. Louis blues scene, guitarist, singer, bandleader and songwriter Alvin Jett passed away on December 23. He was 54. Jett grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, in a large family of thirteen children. His father played drums with blues legends Little Milton and Albert King, and he gave Jett his first guitar. After his discharge from the Navy in his early twenties, Jett threw himself into music, and like many aspiring bluesmen in the St. Louis area, he learned from the elder statesmen of his day, particularly Tommy Bankhead, with whom he played for three years in the Blues Eldorados.
