Na het verschijnen van ‘Blue & Lonesome’ geeft de Chicago bluesscene de Stones een koekje van eigen deeg met het vette album ‘Chicago Plays The Stones’. Oude (Sympathy For The Devil) en nieuwere (Out Of Control) Stones-originals krijgen een make-over in Chicago Blues Style. Ooit klonken The Stones zelf zo energiek als deze band, maar zelfs op hun alom geprezen bluesalbum ‘Blue & Lonesome’ haalden The Stones dit niveau niet meer.
Deze band uit Chicago lukt dat wel, gewoon met Stones nummers. Hoewel Stonessongs als Angie en Dead Flowers geen echte bluesnummers zijn, lukt het The Living History Band met gemak van alle songs ‘echte’ bluessongs Chacago-style te maken. John Primer neemt Angie voor zijn rekening en Jimmy Burns vertolkt Dead Flowers. Minder geslaagd is Mike Avery’s versie van Miss You. Niet echt verwonderlijk, want het nummer is in de originele versie eigenlijk niet meer dan één lange disco-riff.
Primer geeft op openingstrack Let It Bleed een fraaie bewerking, gevolgd door interessante versie van Play With Fire van de 82-jarige Billy Boy Arnold (mondharmonica). Buddy Guy doet Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) en wordt daarbij vergezeld door Mick Jagger op zang en harmonica. Keith Richards komt als gastmuzikant voorbij in Jimmy Burns uitvoering van Beast Of Burden.
De muzikanten in de begeleidingsband zorgen ervoor dat hun band staat als een huis. Producer Larry Skoller en co-producer/arrangeur Vincent Bucher laten het album net zo energiek en fris klinken als ooit Johnny Winter deed voor Muddy Waters op diens album ‘Hard Again’ (1977). Bob Margolin, die op dit album gitaar speelde, vinden we op ‘Chicago Plays The Stones’ terug in The Living History Band. 41 jaar later, dus, maar still going strong!
Larry Skoller vertelt wat het idee was achter het project. “I was inspired by the challenge to take Rolling Stones songs and turn them into Chicago blues grooves, while at the same time maintaining both the Chicago blues tradition and sound and doing the same for the Rolling Stones songs. The idea was to bring a set of Stones songs ‘back home’ by playing them with a Chicago blues groove—to imagine them as tunes played by Muddy, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and the other Chicago blues icons the Stones have idolized and covered. The thing was to really keep the integrity of the melody and the harmony, and to have them kind of reimagined at the origins. I wanted to capture that raw, live Stones vibe and energy in the studio, and present the songs as if Wolf or Muddy’s bands had played them”, aldus Skoller.
En zo laten bluescracks als Buddy Guy, Ronnie Baker Brooks en John Primer horen hoe nummers als (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Beast Of Burden, Gimme Shelter en zelfs Out Of Control klinken als Chicago bluesclassics: stevige, swingende, energieke, electrische blues met gedreven zang. Absolute must voor Stonesfreaks en bluesliefhebbers.
