Wendell Holmes Enters Hospice, Writes Open Letter To Friends And Fans

Wendell Holmes, vocalist, guitarist, pianist and songwriter of the critically acclaimed soul/blues band The Holmes Brothers, penned an open letter to his friends and fans as he entered hospice care. Wendell recently retired from touring when he was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. Holmes Brothers drummer Willie "Popsy" Dixon died on January 9, 2015 of complications from cancer.

Wendell Holmes, vocalist, guitarist, pianist and songwriter of the acclaimed soul/blues band The Holmes Brothers has recently been diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and has announced his retirement from performing and touring. He plans to continue writing songs. Wendell's brother, bassist, vocalist and songwriter Sherman Holmes will continue to perform, billed as The Sherman Holmes Project with Brooks Long. Wendell has been mentoring Long since 2013. Holmes Brothers drummer Willie "Popsy" Dixon died on January 9, 2015 of cancer.

Willie "Popsy" Dixon, drummer and vocalist of the critically acclaimed soul/blues band The Holmes Brothers, has been diagnosed with stage four bladder cancer. He is celebrated for his soaring, soulful multi-octave vocals and his driving, in-the-pocket drumming. Shortly after performing with the band on December 6, Dixon was hospitalized with pneumonia. Doctors then discovered the cancer. He is currently in hospice care in Virginia. Fans can leave messages for Dixon at The Holmes Brothers Facebook page.

Ook deze prachtige avond wordt gestart met “Amazing Grace”, welk nummer zowel op hun laatste (Brotherhood) als derde cd (Jubilation) staat. Het is een ingetogen versie met Popsy in de hoofdrol als zanger. Daarna het snelle “Big Boss Man”, waarin alle drie de mannen de mooie vocalen voor hun rekening nemen. Zo zal het hele concert zijn.

Ze eindigen zoals ze begonnen zijn met gospel. Als laatste “Jesus On The Mainline” en de toegift vanavond is “May God Be With You”. Sherman vraagt aan het publiek “I Don’t Know About You. We Have A Good Time Tonight.” en dat moet iedereen volmondig beamen. De stemmen van de heren zijn nog steeds geweldig. Er lijkt maar geen sleet op te komen.
