Luisteren we naar dit album, dan schieten namen als Howlin Wolf, Ian Siegal, Tom Waits je te binnen. “How blue can You get?” zeg ik dan, want je kan het niet beter hebben. Deze boys doen hun vooral niet na, maar hebben wel invloeden ervan, en het stemgeluid van Burgess lijkt er af en toe een beetje op, maar is ook soms een beetje jawel fatal flowers-achtig, en klinkt gewoon lekker. Deze mondharmonica speler Giles King is ronduit fenomenaal als je het mij vraagt, en deze band heeft veel potentie ... Lees artikel

Popa houd ervan om nuziekstijlen te mixen met Blues-rock en dat pakt altijd weer verassend uit. Nu weer heeft hij samen met zijn vrouw Galea een album opgenomen dat vooral veel Rock and Roll en Country-staaltjes herbergt die naar mijn idee best wel leuk uitpakken. Jaren geleden hoorde ik een heel bijzondere uitvoering van mijn kanjer “Little wing”, in een uitvoering die werkelijk mij op de grondvesten deed schudden. De uitvoering werd gespeeld door een man die wel een heel bijzondere gitaartechniek had, hij speelde nl. op een akoestische gitaar op een geelektrificeerde manier en vooral erg bevlogen. Deze band is geheel nieuw voor mij, en komt gewoon uit ons eigen Brabant dus, en dat ze daar weten wat Blues and beyond is, lijkt me na het beluisteren van deze schijf meer dan duidelijk. Naar mijn idee heeft deze band veel potentie, en speelt bluesmuziek, in al zijn vormen met invloeden en ook nummers van BB, Luther, Thorogood, Trout, maar ook prachtige ballades ... Lees artikel

Dit album kenmerkt zich weer door de nodige variatie, die van mooie ballades tot aan Down home blues gaat, en wat Jazzy in zich heeft. Needless to say dat de texten weer boekdelen spreken, maar dat mag je zelf ontdekken. Wel bijzonder is de bijdrage van niemand minder dan Elvis Costello, die toch even een prachtig tintje aan iets kan geven door zijn zeer goede maar vooral ongeëvenaarde stem qua geluid en bereik-prachtig gewoon ... De titel van dit album verraadt al een beetje wat er in dit album te ontdekken is, namelijk franse chansons en texas invloeden dus. We denken hierbij aan mensen als Josephine Baker, Edith Piaff, Mdelene Peroux, en uiteraard haar eigen stemgeluid wat toch ook wel de sfeer bepaalt. Dit album laat wederom zien dat deze gitarist en uitstekende zanger zich niet in een hokje laat duwen. Op dit album staan bluesrockers, maar ook chicago-blues en prachtige ballades, die door een paar tonen op de gitaar een wereld totaal kunnen veranderen. Man wat heeft die man een touch and feel-rillingen gewoon over mijn huid. Zijn vorige album bevatte ook al meer bluesdingen dan normaal, en dit album is gewoon pure blues uit het hart ... Lees artikel
