Terry Robb is a guitarists’ guitarist, a monster acoustic picker with a truly astonishing mastery that absolutely shines out on almost every cut of this thirteen-track release. From Portland, Oregon, Robb picks with clear brilliance, extraordinary talent and at times breathtaking speed. Whatever he does with a guitar, he does well, with stunning twists, turns, rhythms and rattling authority.
‘Confessin’ My Dues’, his latest release, surprisingly his fifteenth, highlights his fiery fretwork with open tunings, harmonic genius and simply superb instrumental power. Robb work through a wide range of numbers, mostly of his own making, with hints, echoes and nods to many of the early ragtime-blues pioneers from Blind Arthur Blake to Rev Robert Wilkins. This is an album where Robb adds vocals from time to time and also touches on a subtle, jazzy attack and approach.
All tracks are self-penned, but somehow have a strong traditional, roots feel at their heart. Robb moves at times with a blistering blues pace that could all too easily have been tiring or troubling, but with his self-assurance and quality he always manages to remain on the right side of sensible and sensitive. This is a tribute to his long career in the US blues world where his instrumental skill has long been admired with often jaw-dropping disbelief.
‘Confessin’ My Dues’ in reality reflects Robb’s lifetime of accumulated blues and ragtime roots influences and interests. More than a mere tribute album, however, it is a wonderful example of Robb working at the very top of his game. An album that may inevitably bring comparisons with Ozzie wizard, Tommy Emmanuel and another US acoustic giant, Charlie Parr. But make no mistake, Terry Robb is every inch as good as either of these formidable pickers, and also maybe just a bit more, with a startling edge to his playing that sparkles and shines throughout.
