Rhiannon Giddens kicked off as one of the USA’s much loved roots music trios, The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Alongside banjo-picking vocalist Dom Flemings, she has since shaken off those early, initial string-band-sounding shackles to pursue a solo career with considerable savvy and success. With ‘Freedom Highway’, her second solo release, she turns her hand to an enjoyable and talented mix of genres that include some old-style, traditional back-porch music, a flash of Dixieland jazz, some guitar-driven numbers, near-hip-hop balladry, folk, and a few tracks that echo with traditional down-homey, acoustic country-blues.

John Hurt, an old acoustic master, generally much-loved and pretty much a standard album-filler these days, gets an outing together with a range of other titles including some self-penned new material and the wonderful  title track, Freedom Highway, an old Staples Singers song that anchors the underlying theme of the album with an astute and timely review and revisit of the USA’s historic connections with slavery and the treatment of many southerners as little more than commodities to be bought, sold and mistreated at whim by the rich and powerful land-owning American aristocracy over the course of the past few hundred years.

With growing unrest, underprivilege and unsatisfactory political and civic solutions again apparent in modern US society, this album is a powerfully focussed treat that delivers some cutting, scathing social commentary and delightful vocal play from the crystal-clear soprano and inherent passionate response of Grammy-winner Giddens’ soaring voice. A delightful release, despite the immense gravity of the general subject-matter.
