Now here’s a real surprise package. A self-produced, mostly self-written release from Italy with a delightful, old-school acoustic heart and soul that truly sings and delivers at pretty much every level. A totally new band to me, unknown or even heard of until now, this Italian outfit comprises Guiseppe Mascitelli on vocals and guitar; Nicola Palanza on guitar; Paola Ceroli, percussion and shared vocals; Angelo Scogno, keys and Indian harmonium –  first for me; and Nicola di Camillo on bass. The sound they deliver is deftly woven, old-school blues with a modern edge and thoughtful twist.

Joined on this truly top-notch, sumptuously packaged production, by other musical buddies, Dago Red is clearly a band to watch, and ‘Cicada’ a rippling, melodic bit of work with very little to criticise. They have the courage to slip in a slice of Americana with Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms, the old US marching anthem, Here Am I and Lead Belly’s old standard, Good Night Irene, here given an unusually refreshing twist. In other tracks the rhythms and rolls of Africa bubble to the surface, taking the listener by surprise but always enjoyably executed.

This is a genuine discovery, an album of remarkable tone, power and quality. A highly recommended release from a band to look out for.
