Kingfish is a name anyone with an interest in modern blues music will already know, even if they have yet to hear his music. Widely promoted as a remarkable prodigy, he, Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram, was taken under the wing of blues giant Buddy Guy many years ago, an indication, if any was needed, that this was a career to follow. Now he has at last produced a debut release, a twelve-track album on Chicago’s Alligator Records, a label firmly and assuredly rooted to the blues.

Kingfish may well be a mere youth – he’s only around 20 – but the strength of the material included here easily belie his youth with a surprising maturity and mastery propelling the entire project forward at every turn. With his feet back home in the home of the blues, Clarksdale, Mississippi, this is a guy who was truly born to be a bluesman. And with this first eponymous release, he sure as Hell delivers. Ranging across a variety of blues styles, Kingfish covers Delta, Chicago and even ventures into Piedmont territory with some unexpectedly top-dollar acoustic flashes.

This is a truly excellent album, a delight from start to finish, rich in variety, strong on masterful fretwork, a remarkable self-penned lyrical maturity and a voice that echoes his Deep South blues background. Produced by Tom Hambridge, the album also features vocal support from Keb Mo. In short, Kingfish is a guy and an album worth catching, whatever your personal musical preference might be.
