One of Germany’s most prestigious musical awards, Schallplattenkritik – Jahrespreis, went to Denmark’s Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado

Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik is a very important institution in the music life of Germany since 35 years.
Last year, it was a great honour when their hand-picked jury of 159 music critics awarded Thorbjorn Risager’s previous album their quarterly price (Bestenliste) which is given in 32 genres, including opera, folk music, jazz, pop, rock, classical music etc.

Even heavier is their Jahrespreis (Annual price), with more than 100 albums nominated (111 this year), and only 12 winners. On the “Longlist” this year were the latest album by artists like
Keith Jarrett & Charlie Haden, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Barron & Dave Holland, Marianne Faithfull, Robert Plant, D’Angelo, Kendrick Lamar, and plenty of classical music. Here’s that list: Longlist Jahrespreis 2015
This year was the first time that a blues album was nominated to the Jahrespreis. Well, Risager doesn’t only play “pure blues”, but it was in the blues category that the band won the quarterly prize (3/2014).

The same album, “Too Many Roads”, has now been awarded this Jahrespreis!
Here’s the list of the 12 winners:

From the jury’s statement about Thorbjorn’s prize:

Just like when he got the quarterly award, the word “Masterpiece” is used, and here’s the final sentence:
“He shows through fine nuances at production, songwriting and instrumental creativity how fascinatingly multifaceted the blues can sound today.”
