‘Rifles & Rosary Beads’ is een nieuwe collectie songs van Mary Gauthier, mede geschreven door Amerikaanse oorlogsveteranen en hun familie via Songwriting With Soldiers, een non-profit organisatie die veteranen aan professionele songwriters koppelt. Deze songs geven een blik in de harten en zielen van zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke soldaten en hun relaties. Een emotioneel eerlijke song kan een ogenschijnlijk bevroren traumaverhaal ontdooien, zodat anderen er aan kunnen relateren. Dat gebeurt vooral wanneer de songwriter niet te hard probeert er een ‘healing’ song van te maken, maar zich kwetsbaar opstelt, waardoor de song aan het ego voorbij gaat en ook levens van anderen kan veranderen. Elk nummer op dit album laat de persoonlijke ervaringen van veteranen horen en zo worden hun verhalen uiteindelijk een oproep voor liefde en vrede. Het proces van het songschrijven werkt therapeutisch, maar is geen therapie, het is kunst.
