Last week, Eric Clapton announced that he’ll be playing two concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden this May in celebration of his 70th birthday. Now comes word that a new best-of compilation will be released just days before those shows. The three-CD retrospective, titled Forever Man, will hit stores April 28 and will feature 51 tracks spanning most of the lauded blues-rock guitarist’s solo career.

With 51 tracks over three CDs, Forever Man spans three decades of Clapton’s Reprise Records years and features classic studio tracks and a Blues-themed disc. Included are Grammy Award-winning tracks “Change The World”, “Tears In Heaven”, “Bad Love” and songs from Eric’s Grammy Award-winning albums From The Cradle and Unplugged. Guest performers include B.B. King, J.J. Cale and Steve Winwood.

The release of Forever Man coincides with nine concert dates in celebration of EC’s 70th birthday on March 30th. The shows take place at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden on May 1st and 2nd and at London’s Royal Albert Hall on May 14th, 15th, 17th, 18th, 20th, 21st, and 23rd. EC will be accompanied by his band members Paul Carrack, Steve Gadd, Nathan East, Chris Stainton, Sharon White, and Michelle John, with opening support act Andy Fairweather Low and the Low Riders.

Each disc on Forever Man is themed, with the first focusing on Clapton’s studio recording, the second featuring concert performances and the third showcasing his interpretations of blues tunes.

Among the many well-known tunes on the first CD are “Tears in Heaven,” “Forever Man,” “Change the World,” and “It’s in the Way That You Use It.” The disc also includes respective collaborations with J.J. Cale and B.B. King — “Anyway the Wind Blows” and “Riding with the King.”

The second CD contains concert renditions of the Cream classics “Badge,” “Sunshine of Your Love” and “White Room,” Clapton’s memorable unplugged version of “Layla,” and performances of such solo hits as “Wonderful Tonight” and “Cocaine.” Also featured on the live disc are a couple of onstage collaborations with Eric’s former Blind Faith band mate Steve Winwood.

The third disc features solo covers of blues standards like “Terraplane Blues,” “Stop Breakin’ Down Blues,” “Motherless Child,” and “Sweet Home Chicago,” as well as additional duets with Cale and King.

Forever Man will come packaged with new liner notes penned by respected rock journalist Malcolm Dome.
